Poem 23 for 2015

CCC-SLP, Thoughts lately

i.

“I’m collecting card games”
I say,
pretending
ignorance

“can you teach me one you know?”
it’s half casino/all therapy
recently

kids think
we’re just playing cards
but really
they have to explain
the rules
for expressive language practice
and
garbage helps working memory
and go fish practices question structure
and slap jack strengthens inhibition
and with a group, voilà!- pragmatics

ii.
in 7th grade Spanish class,
when we were done with work
Sra. Severa let us
fill up the free time
with card games
man, we thought we were
getting away
with everything

on trend that year
was
Egyptian Rat screw
belabored with 10 or more
specialty rules
fast-paced-hectic
slap-a-thon
sarcasm
and irony’s
first
baby steps

iii.
the kids have ipads
and ipods
and phones
and texting
and free time is
snapchatathons/instagramming/
and kiking crushes
do they even play games anymore
unless there’s pixels?
was time squandered on cards
more beneficial
than time squandered
on technology?

iv.
and
here’s our routine
“what’s something cool that happened this week?”
“something annoying?
“anything you want to teach the group?”

v.

Teenage girls shape the world with language creation
and tumblr is filled with literary and tv analysis through gifs
and there’s something to be said
for twitter’s forced
eloquence through
brevity

Today’s prompt was to freewrite while looking at a playing card. I heard blah blah blah, use playing cards in your poem. Erin’s poems are here.
